The Arcology Garden

How to do Nothing

LifeTechEmacsArcology

A start to de-programming modern society. If social media and modern society is so busted, why? Odell makes the argument that it comes down to the demands for attention that the connected society puts on people. Have a Brand, post your thoughts openly and un-developed. Remove spaces for private thought and for private conversations. Remove context, remove our abilities to be wrong. Monetise the act of attending to something, and then shape that act towards profit.

Jenny Odell Jenny Odell offers a world where our attention can be clawed back, and a framework which brings a person back in to their community and gains awareness of an ecological-derived civic society, with a crash-course on anarchist, communist, and feminist theory along the way.

I've found this book valuable because it's given me vocabulary to approach and think about the issues and moral thinking I have been involved in with regard to the tech industry. Maintenance culture, and the out-fall from that, is fascinating and I want to learn more of this and spread this knowledge. We talk about surveillance capitalism and how it's bad, but not *why- it's bad. This is a good direction there for explaining why having our every moved monetised and recorded and fed in to a system is bad.

Book tackles Attention Economy using Bioregionalism as a lens to recontextualize the world.
