Collecting better notes for art of rally stages when I prep for Art of Rally Championship Series

Rd1 Recce: Norway

stay on the hard pack, the "grass" in this region drops your speed dramatically! especially on tarmac stages

  • Optimal Time based on PBs: 16:07.179

  • Round 1 Submitted Time: 18:31.282

Overall pretty happy with the front half of this rally. The final four stages are quite brutal, with a foggy run over the ice lakes; SS5 would have been a PB had I not missed a breaking point and slid on to the ice. I lost about 15-20 seconds in SS6-SS8. It's going to be a long season.

Final classification

  • 17th overall

  • 7th in GR4

  • 1st in GR4 privateers

Lake Rostavatn Reverse

PB: 1:54.663 - delta +1 without cuts

careful up the hill at the start, fourth gear don't bother with fifth at the bottom and third on the top

marginal cuts around the lake, don't be too brave.

watch for the medical van when turning off the pavement!!

hill w/ six can flags followed by hard right, break before the top of the hill

Kvannkjosen

PB: 2:49.736 (33rd in the world)

the ice stage!! ice cuts are a lot more viable than snow cuts

on entering ice: cut around boat, but not too much. aim for red outhouse.

cut turn before ramp jump

in this house we dodge the ramp jump

both ice exits are caution jumps at teal nimkaadel gates.

caution when driving in to the sunset, obscured brake left

big straight-cut on second ice: cut in on a few carlengths from oil sign, aim for second nimkaadel sign

Laupstad

PB: 2:13.183, not sure how lol.

not sure how to do this stage quickly. this is probably my weakest stage

gear selection and momentum are key, slow in fast out. do your best to not slide.

spend most of the stage in 2nd gear.

lots of 1st and second gear switchbacks. dip in to first gear to exit acute HPs.

Vestpollen-R

PB: 1:56.997

don't know this stage so well, it's a fast one, too.

Kvannkjosen R

PB: 3:00.405 -- lots to gain here, if i got the bawlz

the ice in the fog -- lots of blind drive here, critical to keep my eyes on the top of the screen in the ice areas.

caution @ nimkaadel gate, car will be quite unsettled beforehand

careful turning in for cuts, they're not quite as aggressive as the ones in the primary direction. six cans on the right, oil on the left. blind cut after the ramp. turn in further after the ice cabins than you think you'd like.

Stronstad - Snow

PB: 1:49.196 (26th in world)

First snow stage. not very strong here as-is, snow makes it hard.

first corner is an unseen right, tightens. brake and turn in right at the top of 3rd gear, probably

3rd gear esses in general here, try to maintain motion because car slides under braking in the snow

caution at white gate -- hill top apex

Grunnfor

PB: 2:03:432

Fog. Tarmac Power Stage.

Not much to say here, execute, keep off the "grass". There are some marginal cuts but the deep snow doesn't make it worth it.

Grunnfor - R snow

PB: 2:09.248 (19th in world)

Snow. Same story as the Power Stage, but brake way early.

Rd2 Recce: Japan

Mount Haruna - Rain

target 3:20-21, this one is gonna be really difficult though...

this stage is pretty straightforward; a few options for cuts but much more to lose than gain. just focus on getting through

watch the guard rails

some good cuts in town. the cut between tree and hay bails after the town is probably not worth the risk.

Nikko-r - Rain

(power stage)

PB: 2:45.186 -- lots to gain, but pretty high risk, gotta focus on the fundamentals

extremely careful of cuts at the start, guard rail sneaks up on ya!!

some good room to make some off-gravel cuts, but do be aware of the guard rails!!

Mount Asama - Fog

PB: 2:45.236

Some work to do here, this one you know pretty well though.

Maintaining power and clutch kicking up the mountain switch-backs is key, but don't over-cook

Finding the cuts in the windy-bits at the bottom of the mountain is key.

  • mostly stick to the path on the top, some cuts with pink trees

  • lower level big cut after oil signs before gate

  • careful cuts right-left, red spheres.

  • final left bend can be cut all the way out to the rock

Mount Haruna - Afternoon

PB: 3:03.321

Still really having a hard time with this one even in the dry. lots of important gear selection points, not much room for cuts. lots of tight touge. clutch kick out of corners, i guess.

Nikko - Sunset

PB: 2:29.401

Gonna struggle a bit with this one, i think. not sure why.

surely can find some cuts in the reset visualizer...

Nasu Highland - Night

PB: 2:52.770, with some errors

lift on the bridge in the middle of the oil signs

find lots of aggressive cuts, come back to this in visualizer.

beware hilltop apexes.

bit cut after waterfront village, but beware braking point immediately after cut

Rd5 Recce: Kenya

mount kenya R suns

PB: 4:11.297

high speed stage, a few questionable jumps. beware denktuch gate, focus on execution and no crazy cuts.

homa bay morn

PB: 3:42.693

starts w/ second gear hairpin, focus on not spinning tires @ 30mph interesting cut at the beginning

otherwise focus on hitting the corners properly, no need for major cuts

lake nakuru R aft

PB: 1:21.076

all about the high speed here and maintaining momentum.

let off the gas at the third nimkaadel gate so that you have time to hit the next apex.

careful past the zebras where you drive on to the causeway.

ndere island R night

Power Stage.

PB: 2:21.567

Pretty straightforward. Sneaky tree after the bridge. beware inner haybales on village switchbacks.

lake nakuru suns

PB: 1:20.009

same story. speed, consistency, etc. careful charging through the village, but you can make some pretty decent cuts at the medium right before the causeway.

lake baringo aft

PB: 3:05.340

mix of high speed with some marginal cuts, and hairpins. maintaining speed in corners and proper gear selection. keep off the grass, mostly.

homa bay R fog

PB: 3:39.242

Lots of time to find if i can execute cleanly. big if. don't find cuts that aren't there, make sure you're in the right gear, stay out of fifth for the most part.

lake baringo R rain

Rd6 Recce: Germany

hinkelstein city

PB rally: 19:07.589

gonnesweiler

PB: 2:32.268

lots of touge, just hit the proper braking points and try not to touch 1st gear.

first hill is mean, brake before the hill starts or you'll yeet behind the bales

last cut has a reset sphere.

farschweiler

PB: 40:06.829

⚠ hinkelsteins ⚠

after the church there is two hay bale chicanes, and then you're in to the tombstones

right-90 after the uhh hinkelstein break touge has a crowd-obscured hinklestein in front of the hay bale, dont cut too hard

gonnesweiler R (rain)

PB: 2:40.419

rain, be careful. this one is pretty straightforward.

franzenheim

PB: 2:55.837

lots to gain here, this one is pretty easy and pretty fast. Like this stage a lot

holzerath R (rain)

PB: 4:58.386 -- messy

⚠ hinkelsteins ⚠ but mostly safe, lots of room for inside-cuts. lots of time to make up here. drive carefully/don't overdrive the rain

hockweiler

PB: 1:52.847

minor ⚠ hinkelstein ⚠

lots of room to improve here, i think but it's clean enough to get through.
